Have you ever heard the saying that “money is the root of all evil?” Have you ever come across the viewpoint that “it is holy to be poor” and noble people do not chase money? For whatever reason, a large number of people believe that spirituality and prosperity are not compatible.
Master Choa Kok Sui, as a spiritual teacher, was very unique. Not only was he a chemical engineer and a very successful businessman (MCKS was born into a wealthy and prosperous family), but he was also an enlightened Guru. He was a perfect blend of these varied qualities, making him a unique Spiritual Teacher for our times. According to MCKS, “Spirituality and Materialism are like the two wings of a bird. We need both to fly.” MCKS also taught that money is not evil. In fact, it is lack of money which is the cause of most of the evil in the world.
Notice that this view is diametrically opposite to what most believe. So let’s examine this in more detail.
The Historical Perspective
In ancient times, holy people (nuns, monks, gurus) did not have money. Part of this is that they did not need to care about money. For example, in ancient India, holy people were held in reverence. The king of the land would protect the Brahmins and provide for them. Ordinary people would look after their needs whenever they were around by providing them with food, building a house for them, and looking after their needs. In return, the holy ones would teach, heal, advise, and help ordinary people. In a sense, that was the “job description” for a monk.
However, we don’t live in ancient times anymore. In the modern world, holy people are not looked after by the State or ordinary people. If you were to just sit in a park and meditate, would people provide for you? Therefore, money is important today for even those on the spiritual path. You cannot meditate or serve on an empty stomach (unless you take sannyasa and join an ashram).
Is Money Evil?
Many people say “money is bad,” “money is the root of all evil,” etc. According to MCKS, these views are not correct. Master viewed money as concretized energy. Money is power, and it is neutral, not good or bad. Money in the hands of the right people can benefit many. Take, for example, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which provides humanitarian assistance to millions worldwide. The reason the organization can transform so many lives is because of money. MCKS meant this when he said, “Being materialistic in a Spiritual way is good.” Ultimately, it depends on what you choose to do with your money.
Have you also noticed that any organization working on providing spiritual, noble, or humanitarian assistance to people is never short of money? Abundance and prosperity continually flow to them since they utilize their funds properly to serve humanity. This actually follows from the law of karma.
Moreover, money can provide us with a comfortable life. We can give our children a good education. We can create jobs and employment opportunities with money, uplifting other lives. In fact, material abundance and prosperity give you the freedom to pursue your spiritual goals. One cannot take out hours from everyday life to do meditations, purification, and service if they are being stretched to put food on the table. Hence, having a lot of money is a BIG blessing. This is one of the reasons MCKS designed several workshops, including Kriyashakti, Pranic Feng Shui, and Spiritual Business Management, to enable his students to meet their financial goals.
Finally, consider another perspective. Solomon, also called Jedidiah, was (according to the Hebrew Bible, Quran, and Hidden Words) a wise king of Israel. He was also fabulously wealthy. It is said that the weight of gold that came to Solomon yearly was six hundred and sixty-six talents a year (1 Kings 15). Solomon is also known as The King Whom God Loved. We read stories about the Lord Rama and Lord Krishna in Hindu mythology. Lord Rama was a King, while the Lord Krishna was a prince. Both must have been fabulously wealthy. In the Hindu tradition, Lord Rama and Lord Krishna are considered avatars of Lord Vishnu. He has Goddess Lakshmi (or the goddess of prosperity) as His consort. So, even from a religious lens, it doesn’t appear God has a problem with money. Then how can money be evil?
Final Words On This
We hope that this article has provided some perspectives on why spirituality and prosperity are not incompatible. However, you must change your attitude towards money to attract money abundantly. MCKS used to say: “Money is like a woman! If you say you do not like her, she will go away. Silently affirm to yourself: Money flows to me like a river! Money rains on me like a waterfall!”
I really liked when you said that even god doesn’t have problem with money illustrating example of Vishnu 😂.
Thank you for the article.
