Spiritual Development is a process that requires time and effort (and possibly lots of mistakes). Specifically, when you talk about spiritual progress, a time frame such as 20-30 years is considered short. Hence, walking the spiritual path is considered difficult. Are there any rules which can make the journey faster and smoother? In reality, there is such a set of rules. These were represented using the highly esoteric and mysterious symbol of the Sphinx. According to Holy Master DK, one teacher said the parts of the Sphinx are written on the HaIl of Initiation: “To Know, To Will, To Dare, and To Be Silent.”

The Sphinx

So, how can these rules be used to accelerate our spiritual development?

The Sphinx

The Sphinx is a mythical creature with the head of a human, the body of a bull, the paws of a lion, and the wings of an eagle. According to MCKS, the Sphinx represents four concepts. ‘To Know. To Will. To Dare. To be Silent.’ When studied and applied in our lives, these four concepts form the template for success at anything we do. Specifically, the Egyptian Mystery School used the symbol of the Sphinx to denote the qualities of “perfected men.” The Egyptian Mystery School was the cradle for several other mystery schools, including the Chaldean, Zorastrian, Hawaiian, and Christian. This is one of the reasons that this symbol is also used in these traditions.

The symbol of the Sphinx also represents the technology that leads the Incarnated Soul to achieve a higher degree of Spiritual Oneness.

Let’s examine the applications of the teachings towards achieving faster spiritual growth.

To Know

We have a head. We think with our heads. This is the reason why the Sphinx uses the symbol of the head of a person To Think or To Know. So, what does this mean in spiritual terms? What is it that we need to know to develop spiritually?

You must understand that you are the soul. You need to know that you are not the body, emotions, thoughts, or even the mind. You need to know that you are a being of Divine Love, Divine Intelligence, and Divine Power. You need to know that you are a Child of God.

You must know that you need to become a better soul. You need to know the technique for spiritual practice. You need to know that there is an inner world. You need to know about energy. You must know of the energetic anatomy. You need to know about the aura and the chakras. You need to know what ‘spiritual connection’ means.

You must know the foundation of spiritual practices, the role of the Guru, virtues, how to purify yourself, the Law of Karma, the Golden Rule, the techniques for advanced meditation, and how to study and serve. Most importantly, you need to know and follow instructions.

This is the meaning of ‘to know’ spiritually.

To Will

Knowing alone is not enough. You need to will. The body of the bull represents the will. A bull can continuously work and work. The bull does not complain. It just ploughs the field from morning to night. The bull is a manifestation of persistence.

You need to practice. The body may be tired, but you still need to push your body to meditate and serve. You cannot sit around watching television and hope to grow spiritually. The natural tendency of the body is to be lazy. You need to push your body. Laziness will distract and delay you. If you repeatedly postpone your practice for a few days, that time will eventually turn into years. Before you realize it, decades would have passed.

This means that you need to set a schedule and stick to it. You have to work hard. You cannot stop. Without a strong Spiritual Will, one cannot achieve Spiritual Oneness. You need to be like the bull.

This is the meaning of ‘to will’ spiritually.

To Dare

The Lion represents To Dare. The lion is a symbol of courage. You need courage for spiritual practices.

Can things go wrong? Sometimes, your body might get sick. There are times when your body adjusts to the powerful energies. You will be tested when you try to become a better soul. You may even get the Kundalini syndrome. But one cannot be faint-hearted. You cannot run away.

Spiritual development is priceless. It is worth more than billions of dollars. One has to persist. Things may go wrong – but the solutions to fix the problems are also available. You can heal, serve, learn your lessons, and move on. All these are but temporary adjustments. These adjustments pass.

You need to be like the lion to develop spiritually. This is the spiritual meaning of ‘to dare.’

To Be Silent

The eagle represents To Be Silent. To be silent is to have inner stillness. Inner stillness helps you enter the inner world. Stillness is needed for inner experiences. Inner stillness is required to achieve oneness with your higher soul.

As you develop, your mind will get sharper. You will see the flaws and shortcomings of others. You must be patient and tolerant, love, forgive, and stay calm.

Spiritual Practice gives you the ability to have regular Inner Experiences. You must learn not to divulge your experiences. You will learn powerful techniques. You must learn to keep your mouth shut. You need to know to keep things secret.

Spiritually, this is the meaning of To Be Silent.

Be like the Sphinx

Anyone who can embody the teachings represented by the symbol of the Sphinx is destined to be successful. It is precisely these teachings that MCKS used in spreading the teachings of Pranic Healing and Arhatic Yoga across the world. Within 25 short years, Pranic Healing had spread across over 60 countries. You can read about his fascinating story in this biography.

The lesson for students is to follow the instructions of the teacher. The symbol of the Sphinx should serve as a reminder at every stage of our spiritual quest.
